Oscar de la Renta Collection

When a fashion show starts with a blown-out gown that should technically be a showstopper, you knowspring 2012 is in for a fresh start.

Oscar de le Renta’s spring collection was different to what we’re used to from the man. It was less predictable and most sensational. As the high-profile celebrities and clients glamorised the front row, the raw backdrop muffled down before a very long and narrow runway.

Just as the front-rowers could feel and almost touch the presence of the crisp fabrics glide past them, the nonchalance of floral printed dresses and enthusiastic lace tops whispered out to the crowd.

de la Renta has always mastered his couture pieces, but this RTW had a sweet unity of the two. Most evidence of the association was seen in the black tulle off-shoulder gown and embellished lemon yellow dress with balloon sleeves. Even the midriff baring metallic lace crop top was worn with a voluminous silk skirt. The waist was the focal point for all Chanel-esque sheath dresses, as they were cinched with belts. Dashes of white, neon yellow, emerald green and salmon made the glistening metallic stand out.

The upbeat teaming of socks with heels and de la Renta’s enchanting pieces was rather fresh. The luxe-glamour in an ostrich feathered shoulder wrap and Persian lamb cardigan gave out the unexpected twists to spring 2012. Perhaps, that’s the secret to creativity for a man who has been in the business for 40-plus years.

de la Renta also cast some of industry’s favourite models with the likes of Lindsey Wixson, Arizona Muse, Karlie Kloss and Emily Baker, making his runway show the golden crown for New York fashion week 2011.
